Student Jobs In Leeds: What Are Your Options?
Posted by admin on November 13th, 2008 filed in unionAre you skint? Fed up of it? Well perhaps it’s time to get off your backside and out into the wonderful world of work! Let’s talk about the options for student jobs in Leeds – both summer jobs and part-time jobs during term time.
Student life is amazing, let’s not lie! You function on 3 hours sleep, drink more than a blue whale on a bender, and find just enough time to scrape those pesky deadlines. But one day at the cash-point it suddenly hits you- the little minus sign on your bank statement! Unfortunately, having fun can be a strain on your money. So how can you earn some extra dollar to support your lavish student lifestyle?
Leeds has a variety of student friendly job opportunities; the most obvious being bar work. The city is absolutely teeming with bars and clubs catering to all types of weird and wonderful music tastes. Bar work can be an easy way to earn some regular cash. Only down sides include working nights- and realising how much you hate Cheese when you haven’t had any alcohol. Possibilities of meeting hotties also high; everyone fancies bar staff, right?
But if you value your eardrums then there is always restaurant work. Hours in this type of student part-time job can be quite flexible depending on the place; café’s are more likely to want day staff, obviously, whereas swanky restaurants tend to need people for evenings and weekends. The money can be great if you get to keep your own tips, but often experience is necessary, and you do get home smelling of, and wearing, the chef’s special. Always alluring!
The shopping in Leeds is an incredibly tempting prospect for the fashion-conscious student. If you literally can’t get enough of high street fashion, then why don’t you get a job in a shop? This kind of work is great for friendly enthusiastic people who have an ability to keep calm and helpful amidst a deluge of Saturday sale shoppers. Hours are also much more sociable, often at weekend day times; allowing for the all important Saturday night pizza slob-out!
The Leeds Student Union is an excellent place to work- it’s local (unless you live in Boddington, in which case, nothing is local!) and obviously student friendly. They have loads of part-time student jobs available ranging from bar work to working in one of the Union shops. Joblink is part of Leeds University Union, and is a great resource for students; they advertise a variety of jobs to suit anyone, be it general work to earn some extra cash, or work that is specifically related to your course that could help boost your CV. They also provide information about volunteering- if you like to work for free!
However, with over 200,000 students in Leeds alone, jobs are in fierce demand. If you get desperate though, lugging boxes, washing dishes, selling double glazing, and leafleting in the cold are more readily available. Yet if you value your reputation, they are probably the one’s to avoid- simply because of when you have to answer the dreaded question; ‘Where do you work?’
